Owned by three friends who met at art school, Troika is a working experiment in design.
From the optometrist's sign out the front to the wall covered in old overcoats at the back, there is an unusual installation in every available space.
Even the furniture is eclectic: the raised floor at the rear hosts functional chairs and tables, opposite the bar is a padded one-person booth and the front section has small red chairs and a bench along the window.
A stack of design magazines sit by the heavy sliding door at the entrance. Naturally, the walls are artistically decorated: a rear panel is made up of red tin advertising signs next to a row of back-lit artworks. On a front wall Clark Gable disintegrates before your eyes.
Troika draws a arty-student crowd that usually doesn't make it in until six or seven in the evening.
Bron - 01/04/11 Me & my husband, both in our 40's, have been to the Troika bar twice and really liked it. Didn't feel out of place at all (!), it's arty and low-key, dim red lighting, quite cosy, not crowded. The drinks were quite a bit cheaper than other bars we visited. 3/5 ArtZ - 15/08/06 After so many years, still one of Melbournes best kept secrets 5/5 AJ - 13/06/06 Good for drinks with friends before a big night out 3/5
