Nestled in suburban North Fitzroy, one slips into the Tramway as comfortably as one does into an old shoe.
Opening the solid dark door, it's like entering a softly lit lounge room (so dim are the lights that, from a distance, it can be hard to tell if it's open).
The triangular bar follows the shape forced upon the Tramway by the angled streets while the large, well-worn couches and armchairs provide a comfy alternative to the stools along the bar.
The Tramway is a real '90s deconstruction of the traditional watering hole. The atmosphere, the pool table, and the locals that are almost part of the furniture, are more like your traditional Aussie pub but the polished timber bar and occasional DJs are straight from New York-style bars.
And if you think you feel at home here, just wait until one of the regulars starts up a rousing tune at closing time.
