In this 1890s dining room, Syracuse's owners have created a bar that keeps the stately charm without generating pomposity.
Oh, and the wine list is superb. More like a tome, the list has over 700 wines and while not many of these are served by the glass, plenty are available in half bottle. For the less grape oriented, there is also the usual range of spirits and over 20 boutique beers (no CUB here) and the management swears the Bloody Mary is bloody good.
Large, solid candelabras and chandeliers shed light on the second-hand furniture collection that includes velvet upholstered couches, armchairs and large well-worn dining room tables.
Food is important at Syracuse which is open for breakfast from 7am (the liquor license doesn't start until 11am) and serves tapas from mid-afternoon until late. It also does full lunch and dinner, but on weekends it's open only for functions.
