The Stokehouse's main feature is, as a real estate agent would say, location, location, location. Situated right on St Kilda beach this historic building (it was opened as a teahouse in 1916) the Stokehouse gives one an unimpeded view of the bay.
Around the bar, which serves 16 wines by the glass, are concave cushioned stools and a curving bench piled high with cushions. The fireplace, with a stone chimney, is surrounded by long tables made from heavy treated wooden planks; these tables make the Stokehouse particularly popular with large groups.
Outside, tables and chairs shelter under huge palm trees, while several well-stocked braziers keep it cosy during winter. Huge windows looking on to the bay keep the interior flooded with light throughout the year. Like many other St Kilda establishments, the Stokehouse's clientele is mainly local residents and workers during the week and intra-Melbourne tourists on weekends.
Upstairs is reserved for dining and functions.
barman - 26/04/07 this place will always be busy....which is a pity as it shouldn't be unless they change their act. yes, great location but lose the attitude and pick up some brain cells on the way. is there an agency where you can hire gormless staff?? went when they had an event on, so it was busy but the staff were a real turnoff. 2/5
