One of the best old school bars in melbourne's fair city. 7oz glasses are a must. Some fantastic bands on Wednesdays and Sundays. Attentive good, looking staff always quick with the one liners. A good regular crew who make an outsider feel welcome. Fantastic beer garden and some of the best counter meals you could hope to have in a pub. Only complaint is it shuts at 11.

If you own a pub Rex, you could probably work out how to get in touch with the Standard's owner. I, also, was at that Gatorbait gig and I did not have any problems with the service. It was attentive and fast. the vibe that night was great. I thought 7oz glasses were for beer! I guess the Standard don't try to please every whim and request. That's why it has always been a joy to visit.

Went there last night for a Gatorbait gig....
The staff couldnt care less about you. There is one guy who is a skinny guy with a fluffy close cut beard who is an absolute dickhead. He refused to make us mixed drinks in 7oz glasses saying that they could only be used for beer....
He and the others just couldnt care less if you are waving the money in their faces. I remember being in there about 10 years ago and being told off by the staff for talking on a mobile phone. The excuse was that it adds to the stress of the place. Mind you I was in the beer garden.
How can I connect with the owner?.... I really want to give him a piece of my mind. I own a pub myself and we share many bands and business associates in the business. I just want to tell this guy what idiots he employs and what a bad experience he provides for everyone except his staffs friends....

The staff at The Standard, especially the bar guy, don't put the customer first thats for sure. We spent a bit of money there ordering meals and drinks and found the service to be way below average...

This pub has a great weekend atmosphere in the rear garden, and is good for a large pub fare meal in the week - they are probably too big. Beware the strange early kitchen closing on Sunday - well strange for Fitzroy - 8pm, this caused a drama tonight when 8 of us wanted to order at 8.05, having gathered at 7. We were pointed to the small print opening hours at the bottom of the menu by a harrassed bar man. But you don't look at the menu till you order so I don't know how that is meant to work. We were told we definitely couldn't order in takeaways and bought some crisps to stave off the hunger till the jugs were done. Everyone thought this was a bit off so we went to a nearby restaurant and spent our $130 there. Could try harder.

Ive been to the Standard many times and every time i have been, there have been no problems. The staff were all friendly and the service was fast and efficient. It has a great beer garden and the food is very enjoyable. With its friendly service and great atmosphere, i would definitely recommend this pub to anyone looking for an enjoyable night. One of the best pubs in Melbourne for sure.

This is one of my favorite local pubs!! Can get a bit crowded on Saturday nights, but if you get there early and secure a table you're set. All the meals I've had there (which have been lots over the past few years, including with a couple of large groups) have been really quick and with massive portions. The beer garden I'd say is probably one of the top few I've ever been to.

I decided to book my 30th birthday dinner there for last Saturday night. I had 13 people there, and 3 didn't get there meals because the staff forgot to make it. Anyway when this was found out rather than make it we were told that the chef had 'a temperament' and would not turn the oven back on. Furthermore, the manager, Tony, was extremely arrogant basically gave my sister, cousin and cousin's husband their money back and did not offer anything else. Not even an apology. I had decided to spend a special birthday dinner there and I regret it. Worst service I had ever experienced. When I said this, Tony simply said 'well this is a pub'... so I ask you do all pubs have this type of service? I just want to warn others, if you have a special event coming up, don't risk it... book somewhere else, not The Standard Hotel in Fitzroy.

I asked the manager last night if they would do a function for a 30th - 50 people plus and he said their policy is that they don't do functions. NO good.
