This was once the watering hole of choice for all the hard drinking, I mean working, journos across the road at the Herald and Weekly Times.
When HWT moved to Southgate, the Phoenix went into slow decline, a dingy reminder of the glory days when its phone was on the HWT extension, so often did they need to contact a journo who was propping up the bar.
A sign on the back wall still marks the Phoenix as an official press hotel, but now the decor has been tarted up and the atmosphere softened.
The carpet is a mixture of faux animal hides, changing as you move through its three levels. A kitchen on the top floor turns out decent snacks such as calzones.
Allison - 02/01/07 Awesome, relaxed bar. Gorgeous, friendly barman. Definitely worth a visit. 4/5 o - 20/05/06 Mr Phil - you're having the last word via an internet forum/review comments page - who's the soft cock? great bar, kick arse staff, terrific booze. if you give love, you get love. 5/5 count - 20/03/06 expensive guiness.. 3/5 N - 14/03/06 Harsh butt from the other reviewers, I reckon this place is well worth a shot: affordable (for a city bar), not too trendy (for a city bar), and a bit of bustle. 4/5 Mr Phil - 01/09/05 My advice to the manager down there? Lose the 'tude' 'dude'. It doesn't suit your soft cock style. 0/5 kate filip - 03/08/05 This bar was full of lady boys and smelt like poo. This bar was the worst 0/5
