Think of the roaring '20s mixed with Brunswick Street kitsch and you start to get a handle on the Night Cat.

Dark enough to have private conversations in the wall booths, the subtle lighting comes from a galaxy of mismatching lampshades hung at varying heights. The atmosphere has one wanting to put on a tuxedo or empire-line dress and dance gaily while sipping a martini or champagne.

F. Scott Fitzgerald would have happily talked all night about nothing at all in these surrounds, although there's nary a Charleston to be observed among the dancers.

As live music and a dance floor are the Night Cat's focus, you'll find a jazz or latin funk band playing many of the four nights a week it's open.

The Night Cat is owned by Henry Maas a member of the Bachelors from Prague and creator Brunswick Street's Black Cat cafe. Maas also initiated the op-shop retro furniture fashion that all of Brunswick Street took to heart.

The bands that play there are amazing.
They usually consist of funk/soul bands of Melbourne, and quite a few members of famous bands such as The Cat Empire. All this for free!
DJs are to suit many party people.
The drinks are not cheap, but not ridiculous.
Unlike other busy night clubs, the bouncers are very nice, and not sleazy.
The only downfall to this venue is being surrounded by sleazy guys.
This place is definitely a place I'd go back to.

Great live music. Very sexy dancing. Drinks most are OK but not great. Who cares though in a place like that?

I must say everytime i have been here I've had a fantasic night. great vibe, good service and sexy dancing. This place has the Language of Love vibe going on. Its sensual and just what you need to dance and let go of all the tension from work!!! 10/10

This place had a good reputation once, but they have really let themselves slip. I was really disappointed to hear the same band, hear the same songs and was ‘served’ by possibly the rudest most pretentious bar staff you are ever likely to meet. Little wonder they have a ‘staff wanted’ sign. I was last here a couple of month ago and the vibe was great. Sadly, the funky, laid back atmosphere and feel good vibe are long gone. The crowd was a little feral as well. A real shame considering this was once a great venue. Big disappointment.

If you enjoy long queues, overpriced drinks and pretentious imbeciles, this is the place for you. The Night Cat is a joke. Melbourne institution indeed. What’s with all the hen’s nights and clueless bogans? Give this place a BIG miss.

Funkiest music, great atmosphere, mature but fun people, pleasant security guys and not too packed like most crap places in Melb. Girls there's a lack of sleazy guys as well. This is one of the best venues by far. Thank you Ross and band you're music is therapy for the soul!!!

Awful shithole playing terrible jazz music for boring losers. Drinks aren't cheap either. Don't waste your time at this place EVER. Best part of the night is leaving.

went there with friends who said it was good. we went there on a sunday night and it was horrible. The atmosphere was suited to couples because of the music, and the lighting played a huge part (but kudos for the funky shades!)
I found it as boring as bat sh*t. Sorry guys, not planning on coming back any time soon :(

First time there on sat nite, was awesome!! Music was amazing with something like a 12 piece band. Only downfall - wayyyy too few ladies toilets for the amount of people there... but see you next weekend!!

A generally reliable venue. There aren't many places in town I would go to knowing that I'll be able to hear some half-decent danceworthy music. Night Cat is one. Generally has a positive vibe but can be a little annoying at times if you're like me and like space in which to dance on Fri/Sat night.

Jazz is definetely NOT my style of music, although this place was an absolute gem to find. Great tunes, loved the band and everyone was having a little dance along to the music. Althoughh there is a variety of ages there i would say its mostly for the 30year old age group, but nevertheless i had a good night.

Have been meaning to check this place out for years happened to end up their last night and had a great time. I was blown away by Relax With Max they were awesome, and it was a generally laid back atmosphere with would you believe it friendly bouncers!

Definitely my favourite bar in Melbourne. 1920's-40's atmosphere with swingin' bands. Always an awsome night out if you like things a bit alternative.

The Night Cat is the cultural heartbeat of Melbourne. The interior design reflects the taste of the city and the bands reflect the rhythm of the streets. The groovin' cats seem to attract a diverse, artistic and accepting crowd. However, an inadequate (or non-existent?) ventilation system causes serious problems with the level of smoke in the space. Still, it is one of the best venues in Australia and particularly uplifting to the spirit on a Sunday night.

the place to be the unity, because if u are living in a sunshine just keep carrying on, and at the night cat the sunshine is the vibe of the endulgent admospheric halucinagenic experience of FUNK

Really great place to hang out! Had some ace nights there, late but not an all nighter which can be good. Relax With Max have been on lately & would def go just for them. Real mix of crowds & everyone fits in from suits to dreds.

This place reeks of Nicotine and will not suit any non smoker
( 80 % of population) Out of date management policy to have this situaion is disappointing....

Went there on a Thursday for 15 minutes and had to shower and hang out clothes at hoime.
Considering a smoking ban will be in place in Jan 2007 this will be a good time to go back!!

This place is awesom, although if you want a big night out have a back- up plan it finishes real early. Every1 doesnt care how you look or dance just a chilled out place where you will always spot cat empire in the crowd and somtimes Missy Higgins. Great alternative place.

This places oozes appeal. It has fantastic house jazz, a great mixed croud, plenty of room to dance and have rockin time!
Big venue but always manages to fill up. Ive found Sunday night the best of all to put on your boots and get ready to bust a move!

This is a very cool venue. The last time I was there was when Cat Empire played and the place was on fire. Everyone bopping. Everyone enjoying themselves. The stage being in the middle of the venue creates an ampitheatre vibe. Biggest downfall- the bar is at the back of the venue so on a busy night it is very annoying having to plow through the crowds in order to wait at the bar and order a drink! Bathrooms- same story. The people? alternative, I felt a bit too conservative but no one else seemed to care
