Some bars need to show their class up front. They need to have it in lights, be "in", be seen in all the right places. Others are sure that if your product is good enough then (to misquote Kevin Costner) if you serve it, they will come. The Supper Club is an exemplar of the latter type of bar.
Situated on the first floor, the entrance is an unremarkable wooden door next to the Princess Theatre. The only indication of what's above is a small, brass plaque.
Friendly, professional waiters (a lighter will often appear before your unlit cigarette) serve patrons seated in an eclectic range of leather couches and padded armchairs.
Devoid of background music, the Supper Club is the perfect place for matching refined conversation with quality liquor. The wine list is deep and extensive and the range of spirits starts off well and becomes excellent.
Even the beer range is special - you'll find more beers from Belgium and the Czech Republic than from Australia.

Richard - 23/01/12 I wont have this slandering of one of Melbourne's great venues. I have been going to Supper Club a few times a year for the last ten years or so and have never experienced anything other than excellent service, a refined yet relaxed atmosphere and beautiful memories on each visit. The staff do not know me and nor should they. I am a normal patron like any other yet the level of service on each visit has never dipped below 'excellent', even when the place is busy. My partner and i will occasionally stop by late at night for a quiet drink and snack because we know we will have a beautiful time every time. 5/5 b - 09/01/12 Absolutely appalling service, which is such a shame, as it is a beautiful venue, I have worked in hospitality for many years, and have never encountered more rude treatment by staff. We waited over 20 minutes for cocktails on a quiet day, 2 of which were not what we ordered, when I politely went upto the bar and told the waitress, she was extremely rude, and the right cocktails took another 15min or so to come out I would never go back!
Cheers 0/5 Craig - 19/12/11 Decided to go there after a long enjoyable lunch only to find rude staff who think they are better than their patrons. The door woman (I am being polite) was the worst example of a customer service representative I have ever come across. Not a venue that I will be coming back to or recommend.
Hopefully the owners of this institution read these opinions as the venue will not survive just on reputation for too many years. Melbourne people are becoming smarter with their choice of venue and will not tolerate poor service for too long
0/5 Shaun - 07/11/11 So sad! After a stunning lunch party at the Press Club a group of 15 of us headed to the Supper Club for a post lunch drink, only to be told that we did not "fit" the marketing plan of the Supper Club and they would not serve us 1 drink! In a group of which 2 were magistrates and 4 were lawyers, we left completely shocked and in disbelief at what had just occurred! Suffice to say, may beverages were happily consumed at the Collins Quarter around the corner! 1/5 Zombie - 12/07/11
I read these harsh statements in shock, there is a lot to be said about the Melbourne Supper Club - other than the style of the venue, but the class and morale of the Wait Staff. I've visited for the past two months and have had the best service I've ever had in a very, very long time. I was served by a short waify-black-haired european girl, whom created such a beautiful night for my partner and I. I was aware of such service and have never been dissapointed. My partner however, was so overwelmed, she gave the lovely waitress a gift. Supper-club has a gorgeous system, dedicated to the intimate conversation in the most civil manner, the venue strives for the theater, which by my observation, regular folk don't seem to quite understand the primal aim of this strange yet lovely home. The attention to seating, service and explanation on food origins, wine knowledge, cheese selections is favorable! The big-red-book of wine will intimidate yet drag you into a world of attention. The idea of this bar is exciting, and is not to be confused with the average nonsense of getting 'pissed' - but finding the narrative, getting to know your servers and enjoying the eerie surroundings of decor and selected artwork.
As people have said before me, it's a classy venue and not quite designed for larger, louder groups, I love this place for the calm and collected nature and that terribly unique selection of individuals that run it. I plan to visit like every other Sunday night and sink down into my type of heaven. 10/10 0/5 David Hogan - 11/06/11 Quality food and cocktails, extensive wine list, friendly and attentive staff and a beautiful decor. The place was very busy last night and yet there was always someone ready to assist we needed them. We were far from the 'coolest' or fanciest people in the room, so i'm not quite sure of the reason for some of the negative reviews. Leave your sense of entitlement at the door and perhaps you'll have a lovely time as we did :) 5/5 Karlos - 01/06/11 A once great bar, sadly slowly killing itself with the staff's attitude. The latest time I was embarrassed, bringing my international visitors here and needing to argue with the waiter over a cocktail that we never ordered! Then when I came to pay, it was still on the bill! The waiter was rude and certainly gave no apology. Not impressed and not returning. 1/5 George - 24/02/11 The staff is selective with the treatment of their customers. It's how they filter the right clientele they are looking for.
Very judgmental staff. Don't be fooled by their snobbish nature. After all, they are the waiters. 1/5 Muppetboy - 31/01/11 Sounds like someone has a chip on their shoulder Tristan.....How about the food?? Your review appears to be a little incomplete no? Having said that it is written ever so eloquently. Muppet! 4/5 Tristan - 31/01/11 Bengt was the only helpful person with a soul 0/5 Tristan - 31/01/11 Horrible staff, terrible atmosphere, zero manners on all people involved in our dining, staff think they are better then the customers that are paying their wages. Snobs. Absolute yuppie scum. No wait that's an insult yuppies. Don't come here unless pretentious piece of shit and enjoy being delt with like you are an inconvienence. Horrible. Horrible. Shit 0/5 Aparna Sachathamakul - 13/11/10 Located in the heart of the city, yet impossible to find. You catch a glimpse of a wooden door across Parliament station. You are intrigued. You glide up the stairs with red walls, to reach a quaint atmosphere that looks like New York City the 1960’s. Lamps surround the area with couches in cozy corners. The menu: You’ve got a range of tapas from wontons to dips. The wine list goes from your basic house to French wine that gets decanted to its savory taste.
You are escorted upstairs where you hear there is a balcony. On the way up you notice an array of cigars that you may choose from. On the list is Cohiba Panatellas. One of my favorites. You finally reach the second floor. This place is called Siglo. It takes you back in time for a moment. You take in the atmosphere: the soft chatter, vintage wine, and delicious food as the sweet smell of cigars engulf you. You lose yourself in the moment.
http://cocktails-and-wine.blogspot.com/ 4/5 Raf - 18/10/10 having not been of age when the establishment was considered one of the best bars in melbourne, i have nothing to compare the service that i recied to. the waiters are in general unattentive and rude. i made the mistake of ordering a sweet manhattan, and when i was presented with a dry one not only was i treated with disdain by my waiter, but the barman saw it in his right to come up behind me, place his hand on my shoulder and ask me what the issue was, before ever so delicatly informing me to be happy with what i had been served. with such a lack of respect for anybody under the age of thirty i wish that i did not have to make the trip back. unfortunatly this is the only bar in melbourne where one can smoke a cigar in relative peace. 2/5 Sue - 29/08/10 Worst service and treatment I have eve come across in a bar. The staff led very well by the front of house hostess were extremely rude and made you feel that you were beneath them. They ignored us and I felt that we were not the right type of person that they wanted on their premises. They could not have been any more impolite and unhelpful, can't understand their superior attitude, it was appalling and our group would never go back. Quite sad as the rooftop view is great. 0/5 Sara - 16/08/10 Went there last night for after dinner drinks. The port was fantastic, the cheese was fantastic but was very let down by the way the absinthe was served. I did choose the cheapest absinthe ($15) as I was wary of how it was going to be served and lucky I did as I drank under half of it. I was presented a glass with the shot of absinthe in it and 2 small bottles. I polietly asked the waitress were the serving spoon and sugar cube was and the reply was'we always serve it like this'. 'This' was the shot, and 2 bottles of sugar water and coolish water. I know that they never served it this way in the past as I have been there many times previously and decided to go check it out again based on these comments.Sadly I have to agree with the bar jockey comments. If I go again I will certainly be bring my own absinthe spoon as serving it this way is a sin. 2/5 Chris - 17/03/10 Went on saturday night and had what I can only discribe as one of the best nights I have ever had. Loving wine I found there staff to have amazing knowledge. Service was great concidering it was a full house. Highly recommend to all my friends 5/5 chris - 15/03/10 Agree with earlier comment about parties larger than 4. We went Sunday night, up on Silglo bar level the place was one third full, but they could not pull 2 tables together so 6 of us could sit. We left and they lost 200 dollars of patronage for pre dinner drinks. New attitude to customers required! 1/5 bb - 22/11/09 If you are in a group of more than 5 or 6 then don't bother going...the staff can't cope with the pressure of it all...to the extent that they ensure your evening is extremely unrelaxing, ultimately giving you no other choice but to leave...Oh that is of course unless you are one of the regulars or the ever so-classy theatre crowd, in which case they may make an effort to figure it out...if they feel like it...and whatever you do, if you do go, thou shalt not stand with a drink in your hand...before you know it, it'll be snatched from you - "standing with your drinks is not allowed!" 2/5 James - 11/11/09 Hmm, what was once an iconic and well-run Melbourne institution is now run by incompetent bar jockeys who don't know their Islay from their Speyside.
Let's hope it improves soon, and that tall red-headed waitress finds a new line of work. 2/5 Kellie - 09/10/09 Absolutely LOVED IT! In Melbourne for just 2 nights and went both nights. Desserts to die for! 4/5 Herb - 11/09/09 Went to this bar on a recommendation, but I must say the service was poor and the attitude not friendly at all. Also I just checked my Credit Card and they gave themselves a tip of $2.00. Not charmed at all by this venue. 1/5 Ian - 14/01/09 Been twice recently and the venue, staff, service and wine/beer lists are all outstanding. 5/5 Dee - 07/06/08 5/5
Ive only been once, and it was great. 5/5 disgusted - 15/05/08 Joey - learn to spell and maybe you will be treated with respect..... 5/5 Joey - 11/05/08 I went there with two other people and we are all ninteen and i just had the feeling that the waiter that served us dint want us there. She told us they dint have a coctail menu, whitch is fair enough but then we my freind asked for a zombie coctail the waiter was quite rude and said we dont serve that, whitch is rather strange because im shure they could make one. And even if they could not we wernt to know that as there was no menu. I would highly recomoned going to this place if your slightly older than i am, and dont mind spending a fair bit of cash as a stubbie cost about $9. I noticed that the other staff seemed very profesional and freindly, but the woman who our waiter was giving us our drinks with a side order of attitude and it kindof spoilt the mood.
3/5 Paddy - 08/05/08 Absolutely fantastic place. Went there after a late show at the Princess Theatre and had coffee and desserts which were just amazing. The wine list was incredible, although we didn't have any wine, we were impressed with the selection. The staff could not have been more considerate and efficient and it was a very busy night. Atmosphere and background music was perfect - very very classy venue and highly recommended. 5/5 KJ - 07/05/08 5/5 Bargirl - 30/05/07 LOVE the place, decor, opening hours and especially the wine list (simply amazing to get vintage 98 Pol Roger by the glass! and for the same price you would pay for a completely average NV, eg. Moet et Chandon, at any other bar.)
HATED the service on my last visit. Had a tall, red-haired waitress who came across as a cross between a RoboBitch and a rabid wolf. Absolutely everything was too much of an effort and she practically spat venom at me and my friends. The worst service I have ever received, anywhere.
We were sober, reasonalbly well-dressed and had just finished a shift at a far more upscale bar - so we all understand the pressures of customer service. But that night we were all absolutely appalled.
To be fair, the other two staff we came into contact with were lovely, but our main waitress spoiled the entire night. I was actually forced to get out of her way when we came face to face in a narrow corridor. I felt like a schoolgirl! I have never met with such horrible service and I doubt I will ever go back. 2/5 Al - 04/04/07 In complete disbeleife of these reviews I had to see this for myself. Keep in mind this once was arguably the best bar in Melbourne. The venue itself is still great, although a little tired, but I was shocked by the attentiveness (especially given it was a reasonably quiet Tuesday night) and aptitude of the staff. I ordered two Gossers and they were both poured by an incompetent waitress who left the glasses in a state of half beer and half head. When I raised this with another staff member he could only exclaim they were poured into the wrong glasses. I offered him the chance to make the situation right, but he just didn't understand. Two new beers and I might not be here warning off thousands of bar goers with this review. I can't imagine what this costs these bars who fail to provide a 'decent' standard of service, especially this one with such a legendary reputation. A truly sad time in Melbourne's iconic bar scene. 2/5 Dr Bar - 23/03/07 Sadly must agree with Barman, what was once arguably the best and most knowledgable service and bar staff in Melbourne, are now nothing more than run of mill drinks jockeys.
It time for the Supper Club owners to address these problems immediately before this once legendary venue slides beyond the point of no return 2/5 barman - 08/02/07 What a shame! A once great venue is starting to slip. Went around 2am one Saturday morning, asked for a cigar and a whiskey (straight up). The cigar came quickly, but the whiskey didn't arrive until 30 mins later (I had to ask the staff if it was coming to make sure). I then got my chosen whiskey, but I only got a half shot on ice (was told that they'd run out of said whiskey-I was only told this when I asked, waiter just put the whiskey in front of me without an explaination). Ordered another whiskey, no ice. This one came quicker...but on ice. Single malt on ice!??!! Asked again, for this whiskey with no ice. This one arrived with no ice, with a side of water, as I'd asked for in the first place.
But that's not all! When it came to fixing the bill, they wanted to charge me a half shot that I didn't have!
The place was busy, but for the staff to get such a basic order wrong is very disappointing. Seems that complacency is creeping in. Hope they pick up their game.
Went to Polly in Brunswick, much better all round. 2/5 ArtZ - 09/09/06 a true bar in every sense of the word....grab a port and a cigar and kick back 5/5 Q-Dog - 05/05/06 In a nutshell - classy, classy, classy!Perfect place to get to know your wines;great cheese platters to complement the wines;ideal bar to impress that someone special 5/5 Sarina - 04/05/06 A seriously classy venue...a must to take out of towners. 5/5 Gavin - 12/03/06 If you want something that oozes "New York" cool, then this is it. A favourite amongst the aficiados and hospitality staff who know what they want and can find their way through a wine list than comes in a biiiiig folder and is open 'til late.
Often a good place to retreat and the staff definitely know their art and enjoy what they do. You can't train people to have this type of passion.
Well done ladies and gents, we'll be back shortly (again). Cheers! 5/5
