Emma - 11/04/12 Has always been a great pub, still is a great pub, the only reason I look forward to winter, glass of red, game of chess by the fire at the Marquis! 5/5 Ellie - 26/02/12 Love it, Love it, Love it! always here, always the same, great food, great pub, this is what you look for in a back st pub. Loft is a great find. 5/5 kel - 30/08/11 Love it! 4/5 simon - 01/08/11 thank god for these little back street pubs had a good meal the music wasnt to loud the beer was cold staff friendly and very cosy atmosphere would recommomend better than brunswick street any day 4/5 Bill - 19/06/11 This place rocks. Went there for the first time to catch a mates band, ended up having dinner and staying till close. Best steak in town ($25) and my mate said the same about her parma ($19). The DJ played everything from Oz rock to the Star Wars theme, hilarious. Friendly staff and cold beer, only wish it was easier to get a seat by the fire! 4/5 Eamon - 14/12/10 Have only just come across this one, but will make it part of my usual round, great night, really good pub food, good dj's, happy to recommend. 4/5 Gracie - 22/08/10 We went for lunch on Saturday and had a great meal. There's a new head chef according to the blackboard outside and the menu is a good length with things like lamb shanks, braised ox cheak and some more traditional fish and chips / pies including a couple of interesting options for veggies. Porterhouse steak ($23) came with a huge serve of 5 different fresh veggies, perfectly cooked. Green lentil and broccolini pie was tasty and was good value ($17). The service was prompt, friendly and the feeling relaxed with the open fire going. Some good beers on tap and a full belly feeling that lasted through til late. I'll definitely go back. From previous reviews I've seen here, the new owner / chef have turned this place around. 4/5 Wil - 04/01/10 A great pub, good atmosphere, great beers on tap, cool music, usual pub fare at good prices, would def recommend, good for summer arvo drinks on roof. 4/5 Lou - 05/10/09 what a great find, I love this pub, a real Fitzroy gem with fab friendly service, really great pub food (steaks, pies, shanks etc) at good prices, we were there on a friday night and the dj's played heaps of fun music the whole bar was singing! definitely recommend, the loft is also a cool space and would book it for a function. 4/5 John - 15/08/09 What a great night, the DJ's play great fun music, the food was reasonably priced and tasty. A great place to meet friends!!!!!!!!!!!! 0/5 Steven - 04/08/09 Group of mates, catching up at the Marquis of Lorne, with the promise of good pub grub and atmosphere. Well maybe not. The food at the Marquis of Lorne would have to be the worst attempt at cooking I have encountered, having tried nearly every pub menu in inner Melbourne. Over priced, wrongly labelled, undersized cold steak on lumpy cold, cold Mashed potato, served by a waiter wearing a backpack. Dips ordered were so embarrassing, the barman offered our money back. Not taken by the way.
What a disaster of a venue. Owners spend less time checking out your freshly groomed moustaches and chatting to mates over the bar and focus on the people who have given you some of their hard earned.
Enjoy the fire, cosy surround, have a game of chess....but do not eat at the Marquis of Lorne.
This pub direspects the kudos of Fitzroy Pubs!
Shocker!
0/5 Rebecca - 17/04/09 I agree with Tommo, Al is harsh and a little sensitive! I also live around the corner from this bar and am glad to do so, I aiways find the service friendly, great food, great service and fantastic beers beats touristy Brunswick st it is a real Fitzroy pub! with great live music on Sundays what more could you want! 4/5 Tommo - 02/12/08 I think big Al has been a bit harsh on the ol' Marquis of Lorne, or perhaps he is a little sensitive. Its a classic Melbourne pub, great beer selection including some Coopers, Creatures and Mountain Goat... food is solid pub nosh. 3/5 3/5 Big Al - 01/12/08 I live just around the corner from this pub, but we rarely visit. Why? It's that rarest of rare things in Fitzroy: an unfriendly pub.
Each time I have been there, I have felt uncomfortable. It's the only pub I have been to in Fitzroy and surrounds where you get checked out when you walk in (a la a Western Saloon). The atmosphere is a bit hostile, like you have walked into a Sydney Eastern suburbs fashionista bar, but you are wearing the wrong label.
There always seems to be a group of patrons at the bar, talking to the barman (who I suspect might in fact be the owner). This guy is consistently rude or off-hand to everyone except his little clique. You have to interrupt his conversation to be get attention, and he usually continues to chat to his mates while he serves.
The food is above average, but nothing special. The prices are above average as well.
Summary: Nice food. OK value. Poor service. Looks like Melbourne, feels like Sydney. Nothing to offer that can't be had nearby in more friendly surrounds. 1/5 Amy - 12/08/07 4/5
