Labor In Vain has managed something unique: to create a congenial atmosphere, more akin to a local than a trendy bar, in the middle of Brunswick Street.

Unpolished timber tables seat local residents as they mull the day over with a pint of Labor In Vain's specialty - Fitzroy Amber Ale. This beer alone, brewed solely for Labor in Vain, makes a visit to this easygoing bar worth the trip. There's also usually another Fitzroy brew on offer, often a darker beer such as a stout or porter.

The main room has tables suitable for larger groups, especially if the group is eating food from the bar menu.
Like some rustic bric-a-brac shop, Labor in Vain's walls are decorated with brewing memorabilia including old Vic Bitter packing cases and advertising signs for current and defunct brews. The management have a potted history of the place up on the walls and are looking for anyone who can contribute information to it.

Seriously. The decision to move back to Melbourne is made quite simply after discovery of this little gem. The staff are unbelievable as is their taste in music! I never thought I'd say it, but the Tote has been knocked off it's pedestal.

There ain't any food, but they now have live acts every Sunday. For Fitzroy, the cunt to good drinker ratio makes this this the best pub in Fitzroy, if not Melbourne (excluding Friday & Saturday nights...).
