Jackie O's gigantic pink neon sign, on the outside of the art-deco bank that houses this bar, has become a local landmark.
Visible from the other end of Acland Street, it acts as a beacon for locals, especially those in the gay scene, looking for a quiet drink and bite to eat.
Metal tables and chairs spill out on to the footpath in summer, while in winter the floor-to-ceiling windows are firmly shut.
Thick, purple-shag covered stools provide alternative seating in the foyer and along one wall.
An indication of the type of drink favored here is given by the martini glasses and red bottles set into the tiled wall behind the bar. Behind the bar, the kitchen turns out the usual mod-Oz dishes. It's become somewhat of a mecca for breakfast among those still going from the night before.
All-in-all, a bar with clean simple design and that certain something - it could almost be a description of its namesake.
Kerry - 25/02/08 After a long time between visits I went back to jackie O. What a surprise! New furniture, new look, new menu and great blooy mary's. The staff are really friendly and it is so nice to sit and watch the world go by.... 4/5 Katy - 30/03/06 Nice ambience to the place, funky people, burgers are to die for...but the dismissive service, unfortunately, lets the otherwise alluring Jackie O down. 1/5
