West Melbourne is a suburb that's just finding its feet as a residential community and, like it, the Spencer Hotel is an interesting mixture of styles.
The interior is tastefully decorated like a wine bar - even the cigarette machine has a timber finish - yet this has not diminished the jovial atmosphere in the front bar.
The Spencer's full-service dining room is a world away from the front bar's ancient beer paraphernalia (you don't see Whitehorse, Ballarat or Six O'clock lager advertised much these days).
The exterior proclaims that this is a wine bar despite the small list (only six of each by the glass) and the fact that there's a backpacker's hostel upstairs.
Photos of jazz greats mingle well with the grooves that fill the bar at night, although they never rise above conversation level. Upmarket pub grub is served in the bar for lunch and dinner.
Art - 22/03/10 Great place to go before the footy. Only downside is that they took Coopers Sparkling off tap. Bring it back and it's my favourite pub in Melbourne! Great bar food as well. 5/5 alice - 02/10/07 This place has great service. I have been there so many times. The people are welcoming for all and it is especially great after going to Telstra Dome. The food is wonderful and you can pick either of the three rooms to your choice of expense and style. It's a place to sit back and relax. No one bothers you and most people who attend are friendly and willing to have a conversation.
Try it and say hello to the owner who is usually behind the bar with an actual hands on approach to the place.
ENJOY! 5/5 Sharron - 10/03/07 Had dinner there the other week. Worst service I have had in ages. Beer was also served flat at the front bar. 0/5
