Hairy Canary

One of the first CBD bars to really take off, the Hairy Canary makes the most of its small space and unusual position.
Balanced almost precariously halfway down a steep slope, most of the seats offer fine vantage points (although on Friday nights it can be hard to see much beyond the crowd). In fact, the small space means it doesn't take many punters to give the impression of a crowd, not that it's often slow here, even on chilly winter weeknights.
Like many successful ventures, the Hairy Canary thrives on regular customers, particularly from the new breed of CBD-dwellers. The (extremely) compact bar and the smooth, wooden tables crowded around the pizza oven make for a casual relaxed space without any pretension.
Food is a major drawcard, especially the tapas and pizza.

clare - 28/03/09 really dissapointed, cool location, decent menu but the service was appalling. we went on a quiet night, the waitress wasn't busy, but we waited for 20 minutes after being seated before asking if we were suppossed to order at the bar, to which she said no, and finally served us. two other tables in our section got the exact same treatment, and we were the only 3 tables in her section! pathetic! the other waiter treated his customers the same, and we left after our one drink, and will never go back. 1/5 sad - 10/01/07 the bar staff are stuck up 2/5 Artz - 19/08/06 Many consider the Canary to be one of the founders of the late 90's bar scene, and after sooooooooooo many years, it still has not changed, which is this case is a good thing !!!
Sure they might cater to tourists looking for the "authentic Melbourne bar experience" more than locals at times, but this relaxed vibe can't be faked, nor can the good food or drink.
Still and all round good bar experience, and worth popping in for 1 or 2 on the way to somewhere else. 3/5 Koali333 - 06/04/06 4/5 Gavin - 12/03/06 Having been there on a number of occasions, it never fails to please with a busy atmosphere great for drinks and the food is definitely up there to cater for the peckish to the hungry.
On one night in particular, it was full and we were a bit disappointed not to find spot but one of the friendly staff (with a tray of glasses) asked us whether we'd visited their other venue only a block away called the "Canary Lounge". He brought the ten of us over and we were gobsmacked by the mezzanine layout and the twin-seat leather recliners with tables built in them. Very decadent with DJ putting on some chilled-out beats as we hit the cocktail lists with all requests catered for.
Damned if I remember where it is though! 4/5 Andrea - 09/11/05 Great place. Fantastic wine list and lovely atmosphere. Definitely work checking out on any night.
4/5 Anna - 10/09/05 I really like this place!
It has a very friendly, easygoing and welcoming feel about it.
It has lots of things going for it.
I have known it to attract a very interesting, diverse and genuinely nice crowd.
Great selection of food and drinks which cater for a variety of tastes.
I really appreciate the warm and friendly vibe and the service, which in my experience has always been of good quality.
An excellent place to relax and hold conversations, wether during the day or late into the night.
5/5
