One of the proliferation of renovated pubs in South Melbourne, the Golden Gate is an excellent example of how to transform a pub into a bar.
Looking as well-designed and comfortable as any of the city's New York-style bars, the Golden Gate has married the familiarity of a pub with the looks of a bar. Wooden tables and chairs are in abundance but most patrons go for one of the numerous red and black leather couches distributed throughout the place. The bar runs along the side wall, lessening the dominance it often has in traditional pubs. This bar sports backlit lime green panels and features a bottle display cased in dark wood.
A quiet, relaxed place on weeknights, on Fridays and Saturdays it takes off as a nightspot as the tables and chairs are moved back to allow room for the crowd to strut its stuff under the mirror ball.
