As the setting sun softens Fitzroy Street, the crowd in the George Public Bar segues from the after-work drinkers, the tradesmen and women of St Kilda, into the party goers.
Young Brighton kids mingle with British backpackers relieved to find beer served in pint glasses. And perhaps this is the success of the George: it doesn't try to be anything other than a slightly hip pub.
The decor is functional: the toilet graffiti and the "Ode to beer" version of the Lord's Prayer on the blackboard over the pool table belong to pub culture.
A good selection of beers on tap is complemented by ample seating and a pool table.
Less than a block from the backpacker hostel centre of Melbourne, the George, like other neighboring establishments, is thoroughly infused with the travelling culture. If you want a discussion on the latest Premier League results, here is your place. On the other hand, you can simply choose to watch Fitzroy Street's passing parade at one of the many outside tables.
