Timber is an essential part of the decor here. The floor is timber, so are the chairs and tables and the rack behind the bar while the ledge looking over toward Luna Park is one solid slab of timber.
The large windows, which are folded back in summer to open the bar on to the street, mean very little artificial lighting is needed during the day. And when it is turned on, it's beautifully subdued (there's little direct lighting), creating a soft, comfortable feel.
The Fringe has a 24-hour license enabling it to stay open until the last customer's thirst is quenched and to serve Bloody Marys with breakfast at 7am.
It's popular with families during the day and for meals from the extensive menu at night. The wine list boasts 28 wines, all available by the glass.
mad - 02/08/06 The warmth and beauty of the coffee on a Saturday afternoon is only matched by the warmth and beauty of the staff. Their genuine smiles and top service make this one of the friendliest places in St Kilda. A delightful place to sit and natter away the weekend hours! 4/5
