The hushed surrounds of Fidels are a world away from any other Melbourne bar. Fidels raison d'?tre is cigars: it stocks over 70 varieties from Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
The drinks list, although not the cheapest, is of the highest quality. Along with more than 40 scotches and 20 cognacs, there are also extremely rare selections such as a 1946 Select Reserve Macallan Whisky (there were only 500 bottles ever released).
The service here is truly excellent - it's discreet and attentive without making you feel uncomfortable. The accepted etiquette for cigar smokers is that, once seated, you peruse the cigars in the glass humidor along the bar, handling if you wish, and select the exact cigar you wish to smoke.
Fidels has private rooms with karaoke and cable TV facilities, although there is a minimum charge for these rooms.
The Cigar Society of Australia runs dinners here where cigars are chosen to complement the food and each Tuesday women get a free glass of wine with every cigar purchased.
