When Melbourne's grunge/live music scene took off in the late '80s-early '90s, the Evelyn was at the forefront, its half-finished interior having as much grunge cred as any band. Now as DJs are de rigeuer and venues have to put some effort into their design, the Evelyn is again a leading establishment.
From the sleek black tiles in the bathrooms to the plush red velvet curtains around the stage, this is place that takes pride in its appearance. The open beams have been kept, and combined with the bluestone and riverstone walls, they are now part of the harmonious overall design.
For those chilly Melbourne winter evenings the open fireplace, with its distinctive metal chimney, is surrounded with comfy couches. For the summer evenings the management plans to reopen the once hugely popular beer garden on the roof. Whatever the season, the Evelyn has it covered.
