The Esplanade Hotel, or the Espy as it is universally known, is a Melbourne icon in the truest sense of the term. Standing as a beacon on St Kilda's foreshore for the better part of this century, the Espy has held its ground as the suburb around it changed.

St Kilda has been dramatically gentrified in the last decade: the Espy has not. It's still famous for live music, unique clientele and sticky carpet. Reflecting its place as a pantheon of live music, there is entertainment seven nights a week (it's free in the front bar, but there is usually a cover charge for what's on offer in the Gershwin Room).

There are three bars well distributed throughout the venue and four pool tables in a back room near the kitchen and beer garden.

The Lonely Planet guides tell visitors not to leave Melbourne without going to the Espy. They're right: no one has truly experienced the city without watching the sunset over Port Phillip Bay through the Espy's huge bay window.

Been going to the espy for years, then went today for a full day music festival. After paying entry to go in and being in the bar for a while to watch bands, we went to get something to eat. After coming back, we showed our wristbands and the security guards refused my friend entry as he had tracksuit pants. Even though he had already been let in and we had all paid $30 for the festival. His pants were parachute type material and was wearing a collared dressy shirt, not the standard tracksuit pants.

After talking with Management, we were able to get my friends ticket refunded, but they wouldn't refund our tickets even though we couldn't really stay there as we drove in the same car from the outer eastern suburbs. In all my years of going to the espy I have never seen this happen and my friend always goes there wearing the same pants. I don't know when they started enforcing this stupid rule when my friend looks like he couldn't harm a fly. He's a computer nerd for gods sake.

Used to be one of my favourite venues, but overzealous bouncers are ruining a great venue where anyone used to be accepted.

I love this place. I went to the Espy at the start of this Summer and it was unreal. Right on the beach so you can go for a swim, beer, swim, beer. I was allowed entry wearing boardies and thongs. It is this laid back atmosphere that makes the Espy so unique and fantastic.

It's unfortunate about those other comments re. security. I feel this is a big issue in Melbourne at the moment. Most security guards (and I truly don't believe this is a gernalisation) are big, arrogant thugs that destroy what could be an even happier atmosphere.

went to the espy on boxing day for the marva whitney gig. It was amazing such a great line up for such a great price. Some drunk guys we're hassling my wife and the security guys did a great job of helping us and got rid of the drunk guys. The guys on the door we're really well informed about the bands playing and the times. Good work espy!

Pretty fun place, since scatterblog took over saturdays.
Would be a worthwhile place to go to if it didn't have such agressive dim witted security staff.
One time I was enjoying a nice night there only to be randomly approached by Espy security, and told that I have to leave because I jumped on stage earlier. I explain to them that it wasn't me on stage, random people around me plead my case to them, I even mention to them to check the cameras. I was forcefully thrown out of the establishment. The bouncers and security staff at the Espy ruin what is otherwise an alright place.

I was told on entry that the pants i was wearing were tracksuit pants, and they were not permitted. After explaining that, no, in fact they were $40 pants, i was allowed to enter the espy. Then it went downhill. On 30 minute intervals I was apprached by 3 bouncers who aggressively told me to put my beer down and leave because i was wearing tracksuit pants. These were nthe same bouncers who had let me enter earlier. This happened 2 more times. Moving from the front entrance at the top of the stairs, i moved to the upper level balcony. I then foolishly yeeled down to some irish blokes i was drinking with, when I was yelled at by bouncers "This Is Your Last Warning", I then protested without swearing or being provocative "When Was My First Warning?" The three bouncers then came charging up the stairs, and while two of the bouncers had one of my arms in submission lock behind my back, the third and largest bouncer, equipped with a large strangler's thumb proceeded to squeeze my neck and adam's apple, bruising my vocal chords, with the words "You Don't Know Who You're Fucking With". I still can't speak. As a vocalist (rapper), this event has severly changed my life. I plead to everyone reading this, DO NOT SUPPORT THE ESPY, DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY THAT WILL HELP TO PAY THESE THUGS' WAGES!

Great pub with a great history, BUT pity about the redneck, overbearing, ignorant, violent THUGS who are allowed to patrol the entrances under the guise of 'security'!

Apart from the music there is nothing on offer at the Espy. It is run down and the customer service is conspicuous by its absence. The crowd is generally made up of rude young drunks. If you must go for a particular band...wear armour!!! Shame on the management cos it has the potential to be a great place - they are running it into the ground.

Went to The Espy for a free drum and bass gig featuring Marky and MC Stamina in early January. Great sound. Reasonably priced drinks. Great crowd. I went there by myself and hardly spend a minute alone. Oh Espy, when I get back to Melbourne I'll be visiting you.
