Established as an internet bar, the bar side of things has rapidly taken over from the internet. Sure, you can still surf the net or check your email here, but the mixture of DJs cutting it up and decent bar prices does more than anything else to draw a crowd at night.
The communications set-up and the cheapish prices attracts a lot of international travellers most nights who, like everyone else, spread themselves across the couches and around the pool table.

Sam - 25/05/10 ive been going to this bar simply because what you see is what you get... and when i mean that drink prices are great, they dont rip you off unlike other bars the same product they sell would be $2 extra
THE MUSIC; is always the lastest sounds out (underground that is) and they go the oppsite of melbourne by not playin doofdoof
Staff is great, ive worked in bars and have owned 2 myself so i know how it feels like to deal with drunks and crazies who think they know whats right at time, but this staff simply respect me and ill respect you. there just straight up real cool staff, even a afro is behind that bar ... you cant get any cooler than that
artistic venue, $10 jugs on what they call reggae wednesdays $5.50 pizzas every day, no cover chagers & no jaga bombs, they say enjoy the drink for what if is.
like i said what you see is what you get!
so check it out. 5/5 tammy - 21/05/10 When i first walked in the first thing the staff done was made me feel like its my own living room, theres this guy with an afro who knows his how to make you feel right at home.
music is always up there and covers a great range there
these guys know there stuff,
one of Melbournes best undergrounds bars 5/5 jay - 20/05/10 afro is one of the best under bartenders in melbourne... dont know what cory or laura1 is talking about 0/5 tia - 15/02/10 one of my favourite melbourne hangouts, the staff are always awesome, love the kiwi tunes, and chilled beats 4/5 sean connery - 15/01/10 best bar ever 5/5 Maria - 12/07/09 One of my favourite places to go and just chill out. The internet surfing prices aren't outrageous, the atmosphere is great, the staff are friendly... what more could you ask for? The music is mellow and THE furniture is unbelievably unique and sooo comfortable. I met my fiance there for a latte about 3 years ago. : ) He liked it too. 5/5 Kat - 18/05/09 Really nice place to chill before a big night. Great prices! The crowd there are also very friendly... Every time I go we get rounds bought for us (girls and boys) by friendly backpackers :), which is always fun! Love the couches :).. only set back is the toilets are filthy 4/5 Cory - 01/11/08 disgusting.
afro-man is a tool. 0/5 Laura1 - 30/01/07 I went out on Sunday evening with three friends from the UK and Ireland. Though I hadn't been to E55 for some years, I retained fond memories of this dingy venue with its eclectic mix of people and thought my companions would enjoy it also.
The bar staff were astonishingly rude - particularly the manager (look for the afro). The trouble started when we pressed a button (crudely covered with duct tape) on the wall above the sofa which we were occupying - who wouldn't? - which, to our delight, opened the doors of a concealed lift.
Our mistake.
Within seconds, the manager walked over, bombarded us with profanities, told us we were "lucky not to get thrown out" then swore some more.
We were speechless.
Five minutes later he felt it was necessary to repeat these fulminations.
My friends and I, shocked, finished our drinks and left in disgust, farewelled by manager who felt it necessary to give us the finger as we walked out.
Don't bother. 0/5 Danny - 21/10/06 I love this bar. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and Cascade Pale on tap, and not at a rip off price like most places. 5/5 jay - 20/10/06 yeah it was a cool place to chill, if you can get a seat.
Note: it says NO ont he criteria about cigars yet i asked the door guy if it was cool to bring in a cigar and he said go 4 it sooo im not sure about that one 3/5 DaTruth - 23/09/06 In the top 5 bars in Melbourne for not trying to be anything it is not.
couches, tunes, drinks, good crowd, can you really ask for anything more? 4/5 Anthony - 05/09/06 Great Bar - especially for those working late shifts to pop down for a drink. The lounge feel and relaxed attire makes it a great place to finish long shift. 4/5 Audunn - 26/08/06 Yes, a laid back bar with A+ bar staff and hard working dj's, one of my top 5 4/5 Artz - 18/08/06 After so many years, E55 still stays true to what it is...Melbourne's best New York style dive bar.
Talk a walk down those stairs and each time is going to be a adventure.
One of my Favs. 4/5 Alice - 17/06/06 This place is comfortable and laid back, with plenty of couches and nice music. I also like the art work on the walls, an interesting mix. 4/5 Tony Naracott - 11/04/06 I love this place, such a cool vibe and the couches are awesome. 5/5 Fred - 04/11/05 The waitress is Cool. a sort of "tank girl" with 12 different hair colour. stunning place. 4/5
