I went there this weekend on Saturday, just out of interest because of the great word of mouth. I was a bit hesitent about service expectations as I have been to places that recieve excellent reviews but the bar staff are extremely snobby. This could not be further from the truth.
I would classify myself as a cocktail as my preferred tipple is usually wine or beer, but and the bartenders happily answered all my questions and did not make me feel belittled due to my limited knowledge in any way. I must admit I did enter at 6pm, so there wasn't much of a crowd to contend with, so he could spend time explaining the drinks.
I believe the reviews on poor service are outdated (i.e. 2006) and anyone should give Der Raum a visit.

Thought the bartenders were incredibly talented and put on a great show, worth it for interest and entertainment alone! and lovely drinks too.

Most likely this is the best cocktail bar in Australia. Staff are great. Enjoy the show and the drinks!

I think some of the negative comments are from jealous competition, in my opinion a bar is based on your individual experiences. Dont confuse the way they they explain the drinks for arrogance ,or the dimmed secluded atmostphere for bright neon bars with over loud techno/dance music.Enjoy without the hype

I don't know what some of these other commenters did to piss off the bartenders, but I was there last January and they treated me very well. The drinks were stupendous and not much more expensive than the other small bars I visited in Melbourne.

Great drinks but they are over priced. Yes the staff know their alcohol but they look down on you as if to say you have no idea what your drinking. Boring atmosphere, and love the security cameras. Maybe if the staff cheered up and the prices went down people might come back to your arrogant bar.

If you are into rude and arrogant bartenders with their heads up their own bums and uncomfortable wooden chairs in a bar with no atmosphere then this is the place for you. Wake up people.

if you want a cocktail made by people who know what they are doing it is a must go. Great to bring a partner along to for a quiet drink.
