The Croft Institute is hidden up a series of laneways, on a site that was previously vacant for some two decades.

Set over three floors, The Croft Institute houses a laboratory on the ground floor. A hospital themed waiting area and bathrooms on the middle level and
a 1930's styled gymnasium on the tope floor.

The first floor also houses a licensed vodka distillery where The Department of Alcoholgy makes its Stil Vodka.

The bars name The Croft Institute is a not-so-serious play on the psuedo-scientific consumer Institutes used to advertise not-so-scientific consumer products, Croft also being the name of the alleyway where it's situtated.

Went there the other night when i was in Melbourne (i am from Adelaide) as my mate was leading me down the ally to this place i said "are you sure you know were you are going?" he reassured me and i kept noticing the signs on the way... when i got there it was better then described... i was really freaked out when i went to the loos... it was epic i would defiantly go again.

I swear this place is spooky! Went there Sat night to listen to Drum n Bass DJ Presha. At first, I was quite taken by the hospital themed, chemistry lab décor. Night started well, with a few people in upstairs taking in the music. Its a pretty small space and the dance area soon packed out, also gets hot up there. So I went to the first floor to get some air and use the loo, whatever. I come out and I’m sitting in the foyer area looking at this old wheelchair that’s been hung up in one of the corners, bit creepy imagining the people who would have sat in it. So anyway, headed back upstairs to dance a bit more and it would have been about 10 minutes later, a girl who was on the back wall, stepped down onto an empty glass and sliced her heel open, blood everywhere, she’s howling, I wrap a t-shirt around her ankle and elevate it while another guy carries her out of there. Went down to the first floor and sat her down on one of the couches right under the freakin’ wheelchair! Left pretty soon after that, blood on my shirt and shoes. Later found out that the place used to be a morgue or something, so bad vibe for me. Don’t let it stop you though!

I went to this place last weekend after a long time between drinks. Can I say that the new owners/management are doing something right as the place was pumping!! The grass upstairs is green again & the staff seemed genuinely upbeat. Will definitely go again!

I was so excited about going here! But then we walked through the door. For a starters the drinks were WAY over priced even for inner city melbourne! Then the crowd was mostly older guys in suits and couples. We waited till upstairs opened and went up and was also dissapointed by the "grass" bar that the website raved about......well it wasnt all that! Definately will never go again. Cute bar staff tho......

My review for Cookie, sadly applies to Croft, so rather than typingit again..here it is cut and pasted below with some additions...

This was one of Melbournes great secrets a few years ago....
It drew a fantastic crowd with a great vibe...

BUT NOW, it is nothing more than the most mainstream of bars. (decor is still great, but crowd is not)
The crowd that made it what it is has moved on, and the place feels very souless.

Sadly, this place has officially jumped the shark in a big way.

You haven't really graduated from the Melbourne nightlife scene unless you've been to The Croft Institute. The long walk upstairs later in the night is much harder than passing your average bachelor degree...but expand your mind, this place will. The sounds, colours and smells of this place give you lessons in higher consciousness, without the essay.

WOW! Croft Institute has a wonderful alluring mystique.
The psuedo-scientific theme is enchanting and captivating.
They have creative lighting and the decour is spellbinding and bewitching.
A great place if you appreciate the individual side to things like I do.
Unexpected and surprising.
Very intriguing.
Friendly and delightful crowd.

There are 'medical grade' eye washing facilities in the toilets. Very handy if you are like me and get beer in your eyes all the time.
