Melbourne is a nice place and i was invited to go to Alumba by a very close friend of mine who is very well known in the bar/ club scene. Before I even entered I was put off by the disgusting manner of the security at this place, I have seen some crewel front enterence security but nothing to the extent of these horrible people. To see a young man approach 6 hungry intimidating animals and get rejected from 15 meters away and before he can say a word because he walked funny (like a drunk) is rediculous, this poor man was not drunk he was using a prosthetic leg... But these mungrals did not take the time of day to do their jobs correctly and made a very wrong assumption which could get them in a lot of trouble! I would not be surprised if this young man made discrimination changes against these pigs. Alumbra management needs to open their eyes and fix this very disturbing problem with their security... Remember, they are the first and last people we see when entering and exiting a club, if the don't make a good imression what the he'll will!

I went there last night (Friday), got there at about 11.30-11.45 with 3 other guys and didn't get knocked back (no girl/guy ratio), it was packed as, died down at about 2 or 3, door service, bartenders were fine, I was on a promoter's guest list (which does exist) and that worked even after 11, got offered to become a promoter that night as well. The bouncer said he only let us in because we were dressed up, I was in a full sleeve shirt, others in half sleeve with collar, they take notice of your shoes by the way. Only bad thing is the room, no dance floor, just a big bar with people around it, the other room was booked out. Although we did bump into the whole Melbourne Victory team so that made up for it. Just dress up.

I am not from Australia..However I find clubbing scene quite good and service we receive have always been great.Although I can't say the same about this place. Nice atmosphere you gotta admit. And people are ok too(not the type of people you can start a friendly chat with though, so it's good if you have your own crowd when you go here).Anyway what I've found revolting was the most unfriendliest bouncers at this place that can ruin your whole night. While I was having a harmless chat with my friend at the bar(yes we had a few cuz we are on holiday!!), just as we ordered the drinks and 2 seconds later the bouncer comes and drags my friend outside(which even the bouncer himself got confused about afterwards). His excuse for doing that being 'you are intoxicated'. Well, I don't know why they have a bar inside the club if you don't want people to drink and obviously we weren't bothering anyone else. And where I come from its immensely rude to drag people away when they are in middle of convo.
NOT recommended if you are after a good friendly Australian service. Disappointed!

LOL at the people who can not get in. There is a reason you get knocked back!! Arrive at a decent time or approach the door in a friendly manner!! Alumbra's door is one of the easiest to negotiate in Melbourne.... there are about 10 clubs that come to mind that are harder to get into!! Guys - dress up and do your hair! Ladies dress sexy and smile!!

Wow - some heavy comments below. I go quite regularly on Saturdays and the crowd is definitely 'older' and more 'mature'. I think the Friday's are younger (but hey the youngsters need somewhere to go too, right?). Drinks & bartenders are amongst the best in the business as are the DJs. Door policy is fair... bit cold outside though :-)

It looks like this might be my new home on Saturdays!
I've been several times, although two weeks ago they relaunched their Saturday night.. with 80s, 90s, disco, club classics & house..
the crowds great, musics awesome.. and the venue always looks amazing..
i think its suppose to be 23 yrs+ so thats a change from everywhere else. Also there's a new door guy now and he seems really nice.

Totally the biggest waste of time. I organised a guest list 3 days before, got a confirmation em-mail back from a "mercedes" if thats really a name.. got to the door with my 24 guests, and got refused byt eh extremely rude security guard names john. Will never return their. A huge waste of time, and ruined the start of the night for many of us.

heyy i went last week and got my picture taken, it was pretty easy went with a guy, dressed nice skiny jeans, shirt blak tie... and i even made it on http://www.clubbersguide.com.au alumbra is awesome!

Totally agree with johnni, dee, kkhat, & clint.
That place is a total waste of time unless you think your sh%t doesn't stink. I don't understand why people would go to a club that has rude security, slow bar service, stuck up people, wannabe's, and above all else the same line-up & same music.
There are much more better venues across melbourne.
Keep an eye out on my posts, and I can give you up to date information on the hottest places around.
Been in the game for a while, and know A LOT of people, promoters, dj's, clubs, & club owners.
So i think I should know..

they got their own rules for the friday nights seriously whats with their bullshit reason for knocking back alot of people there? 2 reasons if you go late they try to ask you for a membership and if you go early they go on about being on a promoters list when there isnt such thing. i later found out you need to go with even amount of gurls but it still doesnt work for them they will let the girls in but no guys. this is what i call a mega tight ass venue.

Been to worse, but Alumbra unfortunately is ridiculous these days. The old one was better, Ive been to the new one probably 7-8 times since its opened. However, I cant see myself going again unless theres a bday or something.
I have never been knocked back (always go with girls) but the class of people going there is definitelly in the lower standards.
If you are between the ages of 18-20, you will probably like it.
If you prefer a more mature crowd, you will hate it.
Also, the bar staff are very very slow.

I went for the first time 2 weeks ago..got in with 2 absolute hotties.Dont bother if u dont have girls as i saw a countless number of people denied entry for ridiculous reasons. The main thing i picked up is nobody smiles, its as if everyones ego been given a massive ego boost by actually getting in that all of a sudden they think theyre 'all that'. For girls...the guys are mostly dweebs although their are some masculine exceptions. For guys..girls are alrite looking although i found that because it was so dimly lit most of the girls did not look THAT good once outside(smoko area), mostly european, few blondes, fairly uptight and there are many underage teeny boppers so be careful guys. If you want a FUN night out go somewhere else. If you are a young, snobby wannabee who still leeches off your parents and thinks the world revolves around your rear-end then this is the place for you.

i knw alot of ppl who visit alumbra frequently and i only get good reviews from them...
the first time i went i had a blast...the guys are hot (includin some of the security) and the vibes are good...

I went here late last year with girlfriends on a Sat night out. Had the best time ever. Bar staff excellent, music amazing, toilets interesting, crowd fun~! We didn't even have to line up (cos I was with a group of girls)... although $10 entry sucks a little (usually $15 though). Security really nice also...

Some places are worth waiting for, this unfortunately is not one of them. Stunning decor but a young and self indulgent Friday night crowd and average at best bar staff kill of any good vibes this place could have. You will likely leave with a "is that what all the fuss was about?" train of thought

Bar staff follow people around, bathrooms and outside area. We tested this with friends and went seperatly. Not Nice. Waited ages to get served for drinks. Waiters kept asking if we had finished our chips when it was half finsihed. Bathrooms wet floors and drier to far from taps.

luv friday nites...an awesome nite out wit a great lookin and classy laid back crowd with an awesome location, da music is also a real hit. A younger crowd yes but a great nite out. couldnt ask for a better place. a bit small but still gets the thumbs up. luved it

Lined up for an hour and a half and waited over 10 minutes to be served for a drink. Door staff need to learn how to run the front entrance. General Admission was moving faster than G/List line and crowd was arrogant and full of them selves. Big disappointment that its gone downhill. They dont even sell Malibu!

I am not much into clubby click crowd stay away Fri & Sat. I prefer my Sundays at Alumbra listening and grooving to live Band & its free. Crowd is older and relaxed so is the dress sense. Change your night Oh and I believe they have a live band on Thursday nights now HEADSPACE yet to check it out. Ps Free entry both nights.

great times and funky set up for a shed but give the friday night crowd a miss - NO ONE SMILES and everyone has attitude delux,the worst think is its all under 23yr olds that live at home with there parents that have no life skills and still tnhink they are so damb good.....whatever!

Great bar, a bit on the small side but opens up in summer. A great 23+ aged crowd on satuarday but a young even uderaged crowd on Friday so avoid that day. But get decor.
