It used to be awesome, now its pretty lame, I mean most of the staff and security are rude and in my opinion racially biased, myself and my friends have been refused entry a couple of times for wearing inappropriate attires, when the people in front of us had got in with pretty much exactly the same clothing, what the hell?!
And when you have a compliant the 'manager' barely fixes the problem, if one of the staff memebers are at fault, nah they wont get in trouble, you'll most likely be kicked off the premises or banned, when the staff intentionally try to rile you up, which happened to my friend, when a lowly member was harassing him all night, then he got upset and told him to quit it, the member of staff got the manager and got him permenatly banned, WHAT THE HELL, worst place ever!

My god, what has happened to this place? I seriously can not believe how much this place has changed. This used to be a fun night out with cool people. Now it seems like entering the premises is like getting across the DMZ in North/South Korea with the scary bouncers, rude and ignorant bartenders and a music straight out of Ibiza. Never again, bye Barry's, enjoy your retirement.

First night out last night having turned 18 only the day before. IQ Thursdays, a great way into the gay club scene, I thought. I was wrong.
Left, right and centre the security were rude and unfriendly, culminating in one of my friends being kicked out for absolutely no reason. We were walking to the smoking room and one of the security grabbed his arm and pulled him out to the door. No reason apparent.
When we asked to speak to the management about the unfair treatment we had received over the course of the night, the bouncer directed us to a young, unprofessional looking man standing behind us with a cigarette in his hand. After dodging our questions and not listening to our complaints, he waved us off in the rudest, most unprofessional manner a 'manager' could provide'.
I will not be going back. The treatment and by security and management alike was appalling.

No Krish, just someone who spent many, many years working in the industry and knows how difficult it is to keep a high volume venue running smoothly in terms of security. I'm not necessarily Barry's 'number one fan' but I don't think I'm alone when I say I find it frustrating when people fall back on "Oh, well they must be racist/bigoted/homophobic etc" whenever something doesn't go their way. I don't think some people realise how grossly damaging it is to say things like that about a person or a place when there's no real basis for it. It's quite an immature way to vent your feelings. I wouldn't have said anything if she didn't add that little after-thought into her post. Before i read that it was just the thoughts of someone who wasn't particularly familiar with how security is legally allowed to run a venue - which is of course the majority of the population anyway.

To enter any licensed venue, you are required if asked to show the 5 legal forms of I.D., you have the right to refuse, and they have the right to refuse entry into they're venue. Regardless of what people may think, it is a private property/business and they have the right to refuse you entry into they're building.
You can say no, this is beyond true and in all rights if your concerned then DON'T show it and walk away, Some venues DO NOT allow anything BUT the 5 pieces of I.D. clearly outlined on the entrance of the venue, these are according to licensing law, they are 1.Victorian drivers license, Victorian Learners permit, Proof of age card, Keypass card and/or passport, Australian or Foreign. Foreign I.D.'s are NOT legally acceptable, though it is up to each venue to dictate the way they wish to provide safety and legal accordance to all concerned.

Penny, what do you mean by "If the security relies on a machine to check ID's how do they handle brawls?"? Surely them scanning ID's would mean that brawls would be much better handled because when the police are called they could easily identify and get the details of the people throwing the punches if they run off/try and give fake information! I can't really see the downside in the scanner unless you're worried about privacy... In which case you could just go somewhere else. But that doesn't sound like that's what you're worried about. You imply your friend didn't have a "real" passport so I assume they only had a photocopy? Kind of speaks for itself doesn't it? Yes it sucks sometimes but it's also the law to have an Australian ID or an actual passport to enter a bar. It sounds like you're getting worked up over things that no one can control. The racial comment is just a little bit silly.

I just celebrated my 21st birthday and rather than having a party I though barrys would be a great place to go. I invited lots of different friend groups and they all had a great time. The only issue I had (which was a big one, that put a negative attitude to my night) was that one of my friends did not have an Australian licence, she had a UK licence and that was unacceptable. She also had a copy of her passport which was also not good enough. The reason being they had to scan her ID! If she had two forms of ID with both the same name and DOB you would think that would be enough to let her through. The security guards were rude and said it was tough luck and by asking to speak to someone who can verify her identity I was making things worse for myself. My friend ended up having to go home. If the security relies on a machine to check ID's how do they handle brawls? Also this makes me think that Barrys is a racial club! If you dont have the right licence type or real passport your denied. Im sure all tourists want to carry their actual passport to a night club. Very disappointed!

My Night at Barry's
Over all I loved the place, I haven't been there in a long time but was quickly reminded of how much I love it! I'm a bogan at heart and love cheesy music so yea it's the place for me. (GO HANSON LOL)I was considering going back there more often, until I needed to make a phone call I was looking for a quiet spot to make my call and found myself in the Barreoke bar. I didn't realise it was closed for the evening as there were a handful of people there.
I was greeted with a loud F**K OFFFFFFFFF by those lovely people. I explained I was trying to find a quiet spot to make a call and again they all screamed at me F**K OFFFFFFFFF. So I headed straight for the stairs to leave and was met at the top of the stairs by one of the men who continued to hearl abuse at me. I stated I was leaving and obviously was as I had headed for the stairs. Obviously I was not fast enough for his liking. He put his hand on my back and pushed on my back continuing to yell at me. For those who know Barry's that stair case is a lonnnnnnng way down. I was so terrified he was going to push me down the stairs I latched in to the banister with all my strength and continued to repeat myself over and over " I'm going, just take your hand of my back" (To afraid to let go thinking I was about to go head over down 2 flights of stairs.) Which he replied " I will do what ever the f**k I like!
Yes I obviously entered an area I was clearly not supposed to be but tried to leave as soon as I was told to. Was this treatment really necessary? I would hate to see how they treat people who are actually defying them. I wonder, did I walk in on them doing something illegal?
After the 8th time of asking him to take his hand off me I was able to leave, copping abuse the whole way down. I then went to find the manager to inform them of how inappropriately I was treated by his staff to find out that the owner was one of the people yelling abuse at me.
Thanks for the great service guys! And to the man who was pushing on my back way to go mate you intimidated a 5"1 female, feel good?

I have been going to bar called Barry's for many years and put simply, it is a fantastic night out to have a drink and enjoy the good music. All you people that dont like it are just try hard wannabes, sorry that Barry's has a more down to earth feel! The chicks are damn hot, and the guys who try and pick them up are not boring try hard morons in their 30's like at the other trance clubs. Just a great atmosphere and good people. I would never want it to change and I love its retro feel, I feel nostalgic every time I go there. The only criticism is that yes, the drinks are a little weak, but what do you expect? they are a coulpe of dollars cheaper! :-)

barry's is one of the best places in melb where you can go catch up with friends party till the early hours of the morning on the dance floor or meet new different and interesting people every week. i went there on a thurs and thought great another gay club. i was wrong barry's has an environment unlike anywhere else in melb. i will miss q&a but definatly giving iq a chance. the staff and security are amazing.

Barry isn't a palace, but it also isn't pretentious and stuck up. The people just want to have a dance, drink and catch up with friends. The cover is hardly anything and the drinks aren't expensive - i always enjoy my nights at barry heaps!

I don't work for or know the promoter, so don't bug me by saying I'm biased toward or against the place. I turned up, looked around, and left early. The bouncers at the door were a little odd, but seemed harmless. Arriving inside I found the big back room open - it turns out I'd stumbled upon 80's night or something. The sounded system sounded positively awful - somebody needs to spend some money on that real soon. Also, the lighting in the place was pretty weak for a nightclub. DJ lights aren't that expensive, so some money is needed there too. The bar looked like a bit of a shack built inside, however it was probably built by the inept. It looked like at any moment that the place would fall down, plus it looked like it had never been cleaned in its life. Of course, my trip into the bathroom redefined that one for me. There was urine on the floors, graffiti on the walls, and no TP anywhere. The people there weren't really pickup material, so if that's what you're after - you're better off elsewhere. Overall, I'd give the place a miss.

The music is simply terrible.

A friend told me the promoters/DJs are doing another sat at Motel in sth melb so at least those of us who like venues that get cleaned better can go there instead!!! The DJ just pushes play on the next cheezy track and the crowd go's spastic, they dance sing shout and revert to a primal state..... I actually have nothing against Jack! He looks after us every time we go there so I feel safe around the bouncers at Barry's plus Jack knows what's going on and who to avoid...and so far all his "predictions" about certain people have come true...I think Barry's has a very safe environment and an awesome atmosphere! A must visit.

My friend Amanda and I try and go to Barry's as often as possible. Even if we have to go out somewhere else fisrt, we always end our night there. The people that work there are fantastic people. I can't say a bad word about it.

i have been to barrys the past 2 weeks, every1 is cool EXCEPT for the guy at the door, named Jack who was prowling around all night cheacking up on me and my mates as well as many other people throughout the night! So GET RID OF JACK!!! My friends and I have had this every saturday night and our view of barrys is no longer good thanks to one guy!!! apart from that Barry's is a good night out music gets a little boring but doesnt everywhere?!!

Well if you want a awsome friday night out, Barry's is the place to go. Aside from the odd moment when the DJ forgets he is at Barry's and plays new shit.. every 80's and odd 90's classic that is belted out gets a rip roaring response from the crowd with plenty of singing and something resembling dancing form everyone. I wouldn't have it any other way. See you there friday ladies and don't forget to ask for Pelly!!!

Wanna have a good night with the boys, Barrys is a good venue. Easy to talk but also great for a dance. If your on the prowl for ladies dont bother though as the talent aint there. Recomend though for a light good night

On a Sat nite, a very fun (and daggy) night out - a place where all are welcome. Unlike the trendier clubs out there - read Boutique, Saratoga, Billboard et.al - Barrys doesn't attract many beautiful people, but that's its appeal. Great friendly crowd and a pumping DJ!
